Murder in Canton takes place in 680 A.D. And why not try "Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee," the eighteenth-century Chinese story translated by Robert van Gulik, and compare it with one of Van Gulik's original Judge Dee stories? The final volume in the Judge Dee series is a good read, but interestingly touches on various topics that van Gulik avoided in other volumes. Broughtback into print in the 1990s to wide acclaim, re-designed new editions of Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee Mysteries are now available. In the spirit of ancient Chinese detective novels, Judge Dee is challenged by three cases. Van Gulik's novels are very good historical mysteries. I'd go with "Hard Rain" among Janwillem van de Wetering's books. First, he must solve the mysterious murder of Pure Jade, a young girl living on Half Moon Street.
